Want an idea of how Red Bull Global Rallycross blends the action sports world with the motorsports world? Brian Deegan is driving for Chip Ganassi this year.
Yes, that’s the freestyle motocross pioneer Brian Deegan who invented the ghost ride, founded the Metal Mulisha, and currently owns a monster truck. Yes, that’s also the racing legend Chip Ganassi whose resume boasts Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and Rolex 24 victories. And yes, one of them is driving for the other one this year in a majority of Red Bull GRC events.
In so many ways, the partnership is a reflection of the key trait of both: neither will settle for anything less than the best. Ganassi is known for either signing the best available drivers or developing the most promising young talents elsewhere in the racing world, and Deegan’s standards—both for himself and those around him—are always incredibly high. For what other reason would Deegan leave Olsbergs MSE, the team that brought him into the sport, helped him win an X Games gold medal in 2011, and took him to the podium in half of his 24 Red Bull GRC starts so far?
The idea of Deegan running Ganassi’s M-Sport equipment, given the speed that Ken Block has shown in it for the past two years, is downright scary. Whether he runs a limited schedule like he did in 2014 or not, this is a championship-caliber combination.
ABOUT THE EVENT:
The Port of Los Angeles returns to the Red Bull GRC schedule in 2015 with both legs of its 2014 doubleheader intact. The “City of Angels” is the only market to have been a part of the series’ schedule for each of its five seasons. Scott Speed won the first leg of last year’s event.
