Stockholm, 04th March 2016: History was made in Stockholm on March 4th, 2016 when the world’s best FMX riders met at the Scandanavian premiere of NIGHT of the JUMPs 5th round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships at the Friends Arena
Another comeback celebration was in order for Libor Podmol (CZE). After a long enforced break, he threw himself back into the World Championship title fight. The second rider in qualifying shocked the competition with the Surfer-Take off Tsunami Backflip and California Roll, and put him in Pole Position going into the final, without even bringing a trick to the quarter pipe.
Metal Mulisha Athlete Rob Adelberg (AUS) and Remi Bizouard (FRA) did take to the quarter pipe for the Open Loop backflip. With this, they moved safely into the finals. Also David Rinaldo and Maikel Melero survived the preliminary competition for a top 6 final, with Petr Pilat completing the line-up.
In the LifeProof Best Whip competition it came down to the dream final for the Swedish audience: Pat Bowden (AUS) against the local hero, Fredrik Berggren. Both were pushing the limit, but ultimately the Australian’s huge whips secured his 6th win in the LifeProof Best Whip competition.
In the Maxxis Highest Air the prize money and title points were shared between Massimo Bianconcini and Jose Miralles after both riders missed the 8.00 metre mark and then brought down the bar, to make it a draw between the two riders.
In the final, a thrilling duel between Maikel Melero and Libor Podmol was developing. The reigning World Champion had to bring all of his tricks if he wanted a chance to win. He started things off with the Egg-Roll followed by the California Roll, Double Grab Flip, Tsunami Flip and Nac Flair on the Double-Up. Podmol countered with the Surfer take-off to Tsunami Flip over the Super Kicker, Cali-Roll, Cliffhanger Flip, Supercan Flip and finishing with the Volt. But without a quarter pipe trick in the run, it was Melero who would end with the win and extend his current winning streak to nine victories in a row.
With that, the Czech rider, even after such a long pause in competition just missed out on a fairy tale comeback. Nevertheless, Podmol was happy with second place, leaving with the Frenchmen Remi Bizouard and David Rinaldo to follow.
In the overall ranking of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship Maikel Melero remains unchallenged in front of Remi Bizouard and Rob Adelberg.
The fierce battle for championship points will continue next weekend at NIGHT of the JUMPs in Krakow, Poland for the sixth round of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships on 12th of March, 2016.
